I got the call early in the morning from an energetic Marty Abercrombie, he was feverishly pitching me on an invention of his that had been years in the making and in the throes of impending, invasive back surgery.
He goes on to tell me how he couldn’t move from off the ground - nearly paralyzed with pain when the idea came to him - out of desperation for relief.
More on Marty’s story later...
Fast forward 45 days. I have Marty’s invention sitting in my home. I use it daily and I now understand just why Marty, who had all but given up on golf, was so eager to send me the S.T.A.R. Back Machine.
Marty knew we could reach a lot of golfers, he knew that golfers
struggle with lower back pain and that his product could be the solution. He didn’t know that I suffered from chronic lower back pain and early on-set arthritis. The aches and pains have reduced my rounds by nearly 60%!
The S.T.A.R Back Machine was an experience that provided immediate relief.
The unique split foam roller designed is a stroke of genius. The split design takes pressure off the spine and redirects that pressure to the surrounding muscles and tissues which are the epicenter of inflammation.
One thing to note, the foam rollers are very firm and for good reason. The firm roller is specifically designed to address issues of scar tissue. To be honest, I NEVER KNEW WE ALL SUFFER FROM SCAR TISSUE…
With a bit of research, here’s what I came up with…
This dense, fibrous tissue affects us all and is an underlying factor in many injuries. Scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become Shorter and Weaker. Tension on tendons causes tendinosis. Nerves can become trapped. All these problems can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain as well as tingling, numbness, and weakness.
A common way for scar tissue to form is by soft tissue in the body not receiving enough oxygen (Hypoxia). Hypoxia is more common than one may think. Poor posture, athletic pursuits (LIKE GOLF), repeated use, and sustained pressure (as in Sitting!) all increase muscle tension and result in hypoxic conditions. When muscle tension is increased, blood supply to the area is reduced. A healthy blood flow is so important because blood carries oxygen to muscles. A reduced blood flow means less oxygen and that means hypoxia.
Then it hit me.
Marty was excited because he figured it out.
Golfers are hampered by weaker back muscles, reduced range of motion, pain and inflammation that accelerates as we age.
Marty’s machine seems to be fixing these issues in my experience.
It’s been almost 2 months.
I use the machine for about 10 minutes a day; typically 5 minutes in the morning and a few times throughout the day as needed.
My stretches are productive, my early morning use of the machine usually results in a few back pops - just like a chiropractor.
There’s no need to get on the ground like with a traditional foam roller. This is much appreciated as getting on and off the ground can be problematic for people with severe back and hip pain.
In addition to the lower back relief, I have been working through several of the modalities that are provided with the S.T.A.R. machine. There is a hip flexor and IT BAND exercise that really provides great relief - I’ve even ventured out to find some of my own unique stretches with the machine.
There’s a lot more I will be sharing with you on my experience with the S.T.A.R. Back Machine over the next few weeks as well as more on Marty’s story and his return to golf!
I highly recommend that you check out the S.T.A.R. Back Machine.
