I Couldn’t Figure Out Why I Kept Missing Short Putts… Until This Exposed the Real Problem

Updated: Dec 27, 2025

The most frustrating part wasn’t missing putts — it was never knowing why.

The Kind of Misses That Drive You Crazy

You know the feeling.

A putt inside 10 feet.

Good read.

Good speed.

And it still doesn’t drop.

Some days I’d feel confident over the ball.Other days, nothing felt right.

I’d miss left. Then miss right. Then burn an edge and wonder how that didn’t fall.

There was no pattern — and that’s what made it so frustrating.

I Was Doing Everything the Same… Or So I Thought

My routine never changed.

I’d stand behind the ball.

Pick my line.

Set the putter down and roll it.

It looked consistent.

It felt consistent.

But the results weren’t.

That’s when it hit me — something was changing from putt to putt, and I couldn’t see it.

A Simple Test That Made the Inconsistency Obvious

I decided to test it instead of guessing.

Same green.

Same 8-foot putt.

Same speed.

Round One – My Normal Putting Routine

I rolled seven putts the way I always do.

Result:

👉 3 made putts out of 7

Not terrible — but nowhere near what you expect from that distance.

And more importantly, the misses weren’t all in the same place.

The Moment Everything Finally Made Sense

Then I attached a lightweight on-line putting aid to my putter and rolled the same putt again.

Almost immediately, something clicked.

I could finally see why my misses never had a pattern.

What Became Clear Right Away

  • My setup wasn’t as repeatable as I believed• Small changes were sneaking in without me noticing

  • Those tiny differences were sending the ball offline

It wasn’t that I couldn’t putt.

I just wasn’t starting the ball the same way every time.

Same Putt. Same Distance. Different Story.

I reset, made one small correction, and rolled seven more putts.

Same 8 feet.

Same green.

Result:

👉 6 made putts out of 7

The biggest difference wasn’t the makes.

It was how predictable the putts felt.

No surprises.

No guessing.

No wondering why it missed.

Why This Changed the Way I Practice Putting

I’ve tried drills.

I’ve tried gadgets.

I’ve tried “feel” fixes.

None of them showed me why my short putts were so inconsistent.

This did.

Now, when I practice, I’m not guessing whether I did something wrong — I can see it immediately.

And that alone has made putting way less frustrating.

If Short Putts Feel Random to You…

If you ever feel like:

  • You’re missing putts you should make

  • Your start line changes without explanation

  • Some days you can’t miss and other days nothing drops

You’re not alone.

And the issue might not be your stroke — it might be something you’ve never actually seen before.
